Uppsala University establishes ICCR Chair on Indian Studies


On January 22, 2013 a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Uppsala University and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) for a Chair of Indian Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences at Uppsala University. The agreement involves visiting professors from India, who will be residing at Uppsala university for one semester and participate in academic activities at various faculties. The Embassy of India, the Forum for South Asia Studies and the Secretariate for International Relations at Uppsala University where instrumental in promoting this partnership. 

The MOU was signed by the Vice-Chancellor Eva Åkesson and the Ambassador of India Mrs. Banashri Bose Harrison at Universitetshuset. The ceremony was also attended by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Anders Malmberg and Vice-Rector for the Domain of Humanities and Social Sciences Margareta Fahlgren. The Forum for South Asia Studies was represented by Vice-Chair Ranjula Bali Swain, board member Heinz Werner Wessler and the Forum's coordinator Ferdinando Sardella. 

The MOU will improve the visibility of research and education on South Asia at Uppsala University and consolidate the University's presence among academic institutions in India.
