The Other Side of Enlightenment: Theological Discoveries in The Yoga Sūtra of Patañjali

2015-03-04

The Forum for South Asia Studies was honroed to organise a guest lecture on 'The Other Side of Enlightenment: Theological Discoveries in The Yoga Sūtra of Patañjali', 4 March 201, by Professor Graham Schweig, Christopher Newport University, USA.

Contemporary scholars have often assumed or even claimed that there is no evidence of a theistic vision in The Yoga Sūtra of Patañjali (T.S. Rukmani, Gerald Larson). In this presentation, however, Schweig argued that a powerful but subtle vision of a yogic theism can indeed be identified within the Sūtra, a vision that necessitates a new, broader definition of what theism is. Schweig demonstrated how the conceptions of divinity, devotion, and divine grace are not only important themes in the Yoga Sūtra, but are necessary ideas that deepen the text’s vision of perfect meditation or samādhi. Finally, Schweig offered a newly broadened definition of theism that can facilitate comparative studies and interreligious discussions.

Guest lecture in collaboration with the Department of Linguistics and Philology.
