Conducting Elections in a Plural Democracy

On Friday, 11 April 2014 at 10:00 the Forum for South Asia Studies at Uppsala University hosted a talk by Dr S.Y. Qureishi, the former election commissioner of India, at Uppsala University. Dr Qureishi spoke in front of some 80 guests about “Conducting Elections in a Plural Democracy”, and was joined by Ambassador Maria Leissner, Secretary General at Community of Democracies, for a lively discussion.

It is the biggest election in the world where 814.5 million people cast their vote in India general election between 7 April and 12 May 2014. To mark the occasion the Forum for South Asia Studies at Uppsala University organized in cooperation with the Indian Embassy to Sweden a special event. Dr S.Y. Qureishi, is the former chief election commissioner of the Republic of India and a Member of the Board of Advisors of the International Institute of Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IIDEA). Dr Qureishi, presented his remarks on "Conducting Elections in a Plural Democracy". He was joined by Ambassador Maria Leissner. Leissner is Secretary General at Community of Democracies since 2012. Professor Ashok Swain, Department of Peace and Conflict Research, was leading the discussion.
